Narrative

Lisa Adrienna Lea, 54, crashed into another vehicle on I-695 and then fatally hit six highway workers after being pushed into the working zone on March 22 around 12:40p.m. For unknown reasons, Lea’s vehicle struck a Volkswagen’s passenger side while attempting to change lanes. Melachi Brown, 20, was the driver of this Volkswagen. He pulled over to the shoulder as soon as the collision happened. After colliding, Lea’s Acura drove into the work zone. She struck and killed the following workers: Carlos Orlando Villatoro Escobar, 43; Rolando Ruiz, 46; Mahlon Simmons II, 52; Jose Armando Escobar, 52; Mahlon Simmons III, 31; and Sybil Lee DiMaggio, 46. Carlos and Jose Escobar were Salvadorian brothers while the two Mahlon Simmons were a father and son. The workers came from a variety of companies which were working on the project. Lea herself was hospitalized at University of Maryland Medical Center. The Baltimore County state’s attorney, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the Maryland State Police are all collaborating on the investigation.
